Robotic Surgery Q & A
What is robotic surgery?
Technology has dramatically changed the medical field. That’s perhaps most apparent when it comes to surgery. Traditionally, surgeons had to create large incisions over the areas they needed to access. Patients were left with long, uncomfortable recovery times as they waited for those incisions to heal.
Fortunately, medical advancement has dramatically shifted the way a wide variety of surgeries are performed. Today, Dr. Farnam uses a laparoscope for the most minimally invasive surgeries possible. The laparoscope is a long, thin device with a camera affixed to the end. He can access the area that needs to be treated through a small incision, using the laparoscope and telescopic precision surgical tools to perform the necessary procedure. The result is an equally effective surgery with significantly minimized post-op pain, recovery times, and scarring.
Dr. Farnam can perform a wide range of surgeries robotically, including:
- Ovarian cyst removal
- Hysterectomies
- Myomectomies
- Endometriosis surgeries
- Pelvic organ prolapse corrections
What is the da Vinci® Surgical System?
Dr. Farnam has chosen to use the da Vinci Surgical System to give his patients the most precise, effective, minimally invasive surgical solutions possible. The da Vinci system gives him full 3D visualization into the surgery site and allows him to have a full range of motion with the required surgical tools, simulating his own hands within the abdomen. This increased surgical dexterity allows him to perform even the most complex surgeries through just a few keyhole incisions on the abdomen.
Is robotic surgery safe?
Robotic surgery is much safer than traditional surgery. The smaller incisions minimize complications and recovery times.
If you’re looking for an experienced robotic surgeon, look no further than Dr. Farnam. He was involved in the original gynecologic robotic surgery trials at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and was one of the first gynecologists in the country to routinely perform surgeries laparoscopically.
Dr. Farnam has been offering his patients surgeries with the da Vinci Surgical System for over a decade and has performed more than 2,500 robotic surgeries. What’s more, he has trained hundreds of other surgeons on the Robotic platform and is one of the premier robotic surgery educators in the country.
