Ovarian Cyst Q & A

What is an ovarian cyst?

An ovarian cyst is a small sac filled with fluid that forms on the ovary. Oftentimes, the sac doesn’t cause any issues. In fact, the woman may never even know she has a cyst.

Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Some ovarian cysts cause mild to severe discomfort. Some of the most common symptoms of ovarian cysts include:

  • Bloating and swelling in the abdomen
  • Pain before and during menstrual cycles
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Pain during bowel movements
  • Pain in the pelvis, lower back, breasts, or thighs
  • Nausea

How do I know if I have an ovarian cyst?

If you’ve experienced any of the above symptoms, Dr. Farnam can give you an accurate diagnosis. He’ll start with a routine pelvic exam. If he suspects you do have a cyst, he can order an ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI to confirm its presence.

Even if a cyst is discovered, Dr. Farnam may not recommend immediate action. The majority of ovarian cysts disappear on their own within a few months. Waiting may be the best solution for your body, especially if your cyst isn’t causing you any major unwanted symptoms.

How are ovarian cysts removed?

If, however, you do need to have your ovarian cyst removed, Dr. Farnam offers minimally invasive surgery to minimize your discomfort, recovery time, and scarring. He can generally remove ovarian cysts laparoscopically.

During laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Farnam will make a very small incision, then feed the laparoscope through it. This device is a long, thin tube with a camera at the end. Using it, he can see and remove your ovarian cysts. Laparoscopic cyst removal eliminates the need to create any large incisions that could leave you with an uncomfortable, lengthy recovery. Instead, it’s a highly effective, minimally invasive way to remove any ovarian cysts that are causing you discomfort.

If you suspect you are living with an ovarian cyst and want to explore your options for removing it – and its symptoms – from your body, look no further than Dr. Farnam and his expert staff at Texas Urogynecology & Laser Surgery Center. As the minimally invasive surgery expert in the El Paso area, Dr. Farnam is ready to help you get the best results from your surgery with the best recovery time possible.
